Exterior Inspection

VOL 1 The exterior inspection shall be performed before each flight:

  • The flight crew must be satisfied that the aircraft is safe and ensure a comprehensive exterior inspection has been carried out as detailed below.
  • The pilot who is to fly the aircraft normally does the exterior inspection, however this may be delegated at the discretion of the Commander.
  • Check flight controls and surfaces are unobstructed and clear of ice, snow and frost.
  • Check doors and access panels are properly secured and security seals (when required) in place.
  • Pitot tubes and static vents must be inspected for obstructions and damage to ensure compliance with RVSM.
  • Check wheel chocks are in place, gear locking pins are removed and nose gear steering lever in normal position.
  • Wheel and brake temperatures should be checked. Also inspect tyre wear and struts for proper extension.
  • Check the aircraft is free of damage and fluid leakage.

Notes:

  1. Main Gear Strut Extension
Extension is proportional to gross weight and the pressure of gas in the oleo, and is measured using specific reference points on the oleo - not by the amount of 'polished metal' that is or is not visible. However, as a guide, if there is less than 2 inches (5 cm) of 'polished metal' visible, contact engineering.

    Nose Gear Strut Extension
Nose gear strut extension must not be greater than 10 inches (25 cm), otherwise the centring cam will engage.

  2. Tyres and Wheels. Refer to Tyre Serviceability for more information.

  3. Brake Wear Indicators. Refer to Brake Units for more information.

Note: There are actually 2 Brake Wear Indicator pins per unit, but the inner set are difficult to see at night.
